Capabilities | People Development

This area is about working to develop capabilities in individuals, selected groups, or across an organisation. Work in this area can be prompted by the need to introduce new skills, perhaps driven by new technology; the need to improve the levels of current capabilities, either in particular areas or across the board; or simply by a decision that the organisation would benefit from a more systematic approach to skills development.

People development usually involves

  • Understanding the overall objectives and structure of the organisation, and what is driving the need to develop capability
  • Developing a model of the capabilities that are required, and understanding what capabilities are already present
  • Selecting the most appropriate ways to develop the required capabilities and planning their deployment, including ways to measure their effectiveness
  • Establishing the selected approaches, and making sure they are supported by the performance management system, line management etc.

Organisations change in response to their market place, often at a faster pace than employees can match. In times of growth, new skills can be found through recruitment. Often, though, existing staff are left with outdated skills, causing frustration to them and managers. Without effective capability development this can result in low morale and productivity, the loss of valuable and experienced people, or difficulty in attracting new staff.

The case studies that focus on people development are 'Managing the development needs of 1000 consultants' and 'Rollout of a proprietary leadership training suite'.
